DEXTER & MILO
My name is Dexter & this is my story -and that's Milo in the picture, my
short friend -I'll tell you about him later.
My life started 19 months ago in a kennel and for the first 14 months that's
where I stayed. I watched the world go by but not much happened. I used to get
very bored but I was well cared for. Then one day I heard my Mum saying I was
surplus to requirements; I didn't know what that meant but soon found out. I was
put into the back of a car with a very soft duvet and a big chew. I trembled as
I was very frightened but the lady kept talking to me and telling me about my
new foster mum. Everything was very scary as I'd never been in a car before.
After what seemed like a whole lifetime I arrived outside a house with lots of
Great Danes barking -but they weren't in kennels, they were wandering around in
the house and garden -no kennels in sight! This lovely lady came to the car and
kept calling my name, telling me not to be frightened. Very slowly I got out of
the car and stood shaking. My new foster Mum gave me a big cuddle then slowly
introduced me to her 5 Danes and then her husband. I immediately fell in love
with my new foster Mum and knew then I had to protect for ever. To cut a long
story short I had a wonderful time. I hated going to the vets but I had a
problem with my ears and eyes so had to go several times. It meant I had to stay
with my foster Mum till I was better but I didn't mind that at all. I had so
many things to learn about collar, lead, stairs, sofa, people, long walks, in
fact the outside world in general. I used to get told off a bit but I didn't
mind as I loved my Mum & Dad and was truly happy.
Then one day I met this lady with a very funny dog called Milo (him in the
picture). He's 5 now and this lady rescued him when he was 2 and he told me she
was lovely and the best woman in the world. Milo said he needed a friend -I
liked him and the lady but had this terrible feeling I would have to leave my
foster Mum. It's not often I'm right but this time I was. One day my foster Mum
put me in the car; she was crying but kept telling me I was going to a wonderful
new home for ever and I was going to be living with my friend Milo. I soon
realized Milo was right about his Mum, she was lovely. We lived in the country
and I went to bed with my Mum and Milo. I felt I had to look after her as she
had had a terrible accident with a horse. The next few months were so happy but
then one afternoon we had come back from a lovely long walk -Milo & I had been
playing silly games together -and we went out for a drink. We came back in to
find our Mum lying on the floor. We sniffed her and nudged her then Milo told me
something was wrong. We became very frightened so Milo said we had to bark to
get someone’s attention. I didn't know if this was right as we never normally
barked but Milo said we had to. So we did; we barked on and off for 2 days but
our Mum still never moved. We were very scared and hungry but we never left our
Mum. Then Milo told me he thought our Mum was dead but I didn't know what that
meant. Then suddenly we heard banging on the door and we- hid in the corner
because we were so terrified. Then there were lights and lots of people in
uniforms, some black, some green. They took our Mum away. Then they took us.
The next
week was too frightening to talk about; we were in a kennel and didn’t know what
was happening. Then one night it was very dark and Milo said it was very late;
then suddenly I heard a voice I knew, it was my foster mum. She’d come to get
me. I was scared Milo wasn't coming but she told me it was going to be alright
for me & Milo. On the way back to her house I was able to tell Milo all about my
foster Mum and her dogs and the truly happy place I had once lived.
We are there now but know we cannot stay. We think about our dead Mum a lot, she
was perfect and we loved her to bits. We desperately want someone to love us the
way she did, but we want to stay together. If you can give us a home, we want
one for ever. Please.
